Amazon Scraper API vs Proxy: Choose a Product Data Source
Compare seller APIs, licensed Amazon product data and proxy page checks by record, access scope and reuse rights.
Read guideChoose proxy routes and sessions for AI-agent retrieval. Validate useful content and control latency, retries, and cost.

For an agent retrieving public web content, choose a residential route only when an authorized fetch needs a different egress path or supported region. Set the job's acceptance rule, deadline, and spend cap first; then verify the returned page and count validated retrieval jobs, not model calls.
A proxy supplies a connection and, where supported, a location or session policy. The browser or HTTP client handles navigation, cookies, and extraction; the agent workflow handles source selection, citations, and the answer. A residential route does not provide crawling or answer quality.
Assign each job a stable ID and state what counts as useful output before choosing a route.
| Field | Example contract |
|---|---|
| Sources | Three authorized product documentation pages |
| Required result | Main text, source URL, and observed timestamp |
| Region | United Kingdom as reported by the target |
| Freshness | Page observed during this run |
| Deadline | Complete or return an explicit failure by the job deadline |
| Spend cap | Stop retries when the job budget is exhausted |
| Acceptance | Required content is present, final URL is expected, and response is not a login or challenge page |
Check the target's terms and robots.txt rules in RFC 9309. The Robots Exclusion Protocol is a crawler coordination standard; it does not itself grant access rights. When a target returns 429 Too Many Requests, pause and honor any Retry-After value before another attempt.
| Failure or requirement | Option and route effect | Application responsibility |
|---|---|---|
| A licensed API has the required fields | Use the official API or feed; no route change needed | Authentication, quota, field validation |
| Direct fetch returns valid content | Keep the direct route | Browser, parser, freshness |
| An authorized fetch fails from the current network | Test residential or datacenter access for a different egress path or supported region | Authorization, extraction, acceptance |
| Related pages need shared browser state | Test sticky routing or a task-owned browser context for continuity | Cookies, account state, safe retries |
| Content arrives but extraction is empty | Investigate the parser or browser; a route change usually does not help | DOM handling, source checks, index writes |
A login page indicates an account or authorization problem; changing the IP does not add access. Empty extracted fields point to parsing or rendering. Measure the failing stage before paying for another route.
Playwright's network documentation supports HTTP(S) and SOCKS5 proxy configuration globally or per browser context. That configuration routes requests; it does not guarantee the browser profile, locale, cookies, or target response. Crawlee's session-management guide explains how its crawler sessions coordinate session identity and cookies, and when a session can be marked bad or retired.
| Layer | Owns | Does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Proxy route | Egress path, supported location, and session behavior | Useful page content or answer quality |
| Browser or HTTP client | Navigation, cookies, headers, and response capture | Target acceptance or correct extraction |
| Managed fetch or browser service | Runtime, extraction, or retry features it documents | Output matching the application schema |
| Agent or MCP client | Job contract, source choice, citations, and spend limit | Success of an underlying route or parser |
A planning budget assigns time to stages before a run. These values are illustrative allocations, not provider measurements.
route connect and TLS 350 ms
navigation and response 900 ms
extract and validate 500 ms
retrieve and cite 750 ms
-------------------------------
planning total 2,500 ms
Measure stage timings for the real target and report p50, p95, timeouts, and completion before the job deadline. Apify's residential proxy documentation describes traffic billing, variable peer-to-peer speed, and interruptions. One fast request therefore does not establish sustained latency. Retries can improve completion while exceeding the time or spend cap.
Keep the permitted retrieval sequence under one task ID. After a route error, close the old context before assigning a replacement route so the recorded cookies, browser state, and route describe the same attempt.
claim task lease
open task-owned browser context and assigned route
fetch the permitted source
validate final URL, region and required content
if valid: save content, source and timings
if target says slow down: save cooldown and stop
if route fails and budget remains: close context and retry once by policy
otherwise: save the failing stage and return an explicit error
Cloudflare's bot score documentation describes request signals considered by its bot-management systems. A residential IP is one network input; it does not establish that a browser will be accepted. Keep the retrieval authorized and validate the page received.
For each attempt, retain the target and final URLs, route label, session ID, observed region, response status, extracted-content status, stage timings, bytes, and billed traffic when the provider exposes it. Count unique accepted retrieval jobs as the denominator. An HTTP success containing a challenge page fails the content check.
The RAG web-crawling guide covers discovery and index reconciliation. The browser-agent session guide, sticky-session guide, and Playwright proxy guide cover adjacent route and client decisions.
Caution: Route tests can incur provider charges. Use an authorized test workload, set enforced spend and request caps, and stop at the first breached limit. Use a provider sandbox when available.
Select a route only after a small, permitted run shows it meets the accepted-content, latency, and spend limits.
Scale your workflows with the tools you already use. Rotating or sticky sessions up to 72 hours.
