Amazon Scraper API vs Proxy: Choose a Product Data Source
Compare seller APIs, licensed Amazon product data and proxy page checks by record, access scope and reuse rights.
Read guideCompare HTTP CONNECT and SOCKS5 DNS behavior, proxy-leg security, and authentication. Run one bounded curl check against an authorized endpoint.

Quick answer: Choose HTTP when a client needs features such as CONNECT; choose SOCKS5 when its software or endpoint requires SOCKS. In curl, socks5:// uses local DNS while socks5h:// asks the proxy to resolve the hostname, so test in the same client that will run the job.
Warning: Start with an owned sandbox endpoint and an authorized test route. A production check requires explicit permission and a fixed traffic allowance. Send one request and stop; traffic charges may apply. Enter credentials only through the documented prompt. A plain HTTP proxy connection does not encrypt the client-to-proxy leg.
| Proxy URL in curl | Client-to-proxy exchange | Destination and DNS consequence | Buyer check |
|---|---|---|---|
http://host:port |
HTTP request to the proxy | An HTTPS destination normally starts a CONNECT tunnel; the proxy can see the CONNECT authority | Confirm the proxy port and how credentials are protected on this leg |
https://host:port |
TLS to the proxy, then proxy protocol inside that connection | The destination can still be HTTPS through CONNECT | Verify the proxy certificate and that the client supports HTTPS proxies |
socks4://host:port |
SOCKS4 exchange | Do not assume hostname resolution happens remotely | Check whether the client needs a SOCKS4a-style hostname path |
socks5://host:port |
SOCKS5 method negotiation and request | curl resolves the destination hostname locally | A local resolver still learns the destination name |
socks5h://host:port |
SOCKS5 exchange with hostname resolution delegated | The proxy resolves the destination hostname | Confirm that the provider and client support remote resolution |
These schemes describe the client-to-proxy transport. They do not identify IP ownership or guarantee a destination response. Providers can differ in authentication method, DNS policy, and target restrictions even when they support the same scheme.
curl documents the scheme mapping and the distinction between socks5 and socks5h in its --proxy and --socks5-hostname options. SOCKS5 method negotiation is defined separately in RFC 1928, with username/password authentication specified in RFC 1929.
Choose according to the client’s supported schemes, required hostname-resolution path, and authentication method. curl exposes SOCKS4, SOCKS4a, SOCKS5, and SOCKS5 with proxy-side hostname resolution as separate options. SOCKS5 method negotiation and username/password authentication are defined in RFC 1928 and RFC 1929.
A client that accepts only a SOCKS4 URL cannot automatically use a provider’s SOCKS5 credentials. When the proxy must resolve the destination hostname, use a client mode such as socks5h:// only when both the client and endpoint support it. Test the exact application because an open socket alone does not confirm that it sent the intended hostname or authentication method.
An http:// proxy URL selects HTTP on the client-to-proxy leg. For an HTTPS destination, the client normally requests a CONNECT tunnel. RFC 9110 defines a successful 2xx response as the point where the connection switches to tunnel mode, and 407 Proxy Authentication Required as a proxy authentication challenge. The destination's TLS handshake then runs through that tunnel.
An https:// proxy URL changes the first leg: curl establishes TLS to the proxy. The exit type remains a separate property, as does the destination's view of IP ownership. A comparison of HTTPS and SOCKS5 therefore covers transport and DNS behavior, not a universal privacy ranking.
The same distinction applies when comparing HTTP and HTTPS proxy endpoints. If the client sends proxy credentials over a plain HTTP connection, those credentials are not protected by TLS on that leg. Use a provider endpoint and client configuration that protect the credential exchange, and never put a real password in a copied command or repository. A 407 names the proxy-authentication stage; inspect credentials before diagnosing the destination.
The following fixture checks one permitted HTTPS URL through one provider endpoint and removes its temporary response file on exit.
Prerequisites: The shell example passes bash -n with Bash 3.2.57 on macOS. curl 8.7.1 is installed for the proxy request; a successful request requires an authorized endpoint. Install Bash from the official GNU Bash page and curl from the official curl download page if needed. The proxy must accept username/password authentication. Set TARGET_URL to one permitted HTTPS target. Keep the target fixed when comparing schemes.
Run this in an interactive Bash terminal for a proxy that accepts username/password authentication. Enter only the scheme, host and port for PROXY_URL, then a username without a colon. curl receives the username through --proxy-user and prompts separately for the password, as described in its HTTP scripting documentation. The password is not placed in a shell variable or command argument. The username remains visible in curl’s arguments; the prompt does not encrypt the proxy connection.

Illustrative output for a successful HTTP CONNECT request:
target=200 connect=200
This shows the expected fields, not a provider benchmark. The scheme-specific interpretation follows below.
Read the result according to the selected scheme. For HTTP CONNECT, connect=200 means the tunnel was accepted and target describes the destination response. SOCKS does not use HTTP CONNECT, so do not turn a blank or inapplicable CONNECT field into a SOCKS failure. A destination 200 is still only one response from one target at one moment.
To test DNS behavior, repeat the same permitted target with the provider's socks5:// and socks5h:// modes. Keep the client, destination and other options fixed. A resolver observation from another application does not prove what this curl process did.
| Observation | Layer that answered | Next check |
|---|---|---|
407 Proxy Authentication Required |
HTTP proxy authentication | Recheck endpoint, credential method and whether the proxy leg is protected |
TLS error immediately after an https:// proxy connection |
Client-to-proxy TLS | Check certificate validation and HTTPS-proxy support |
| CONNECT succeeds, destination TLS fails | Destination tunnel or target TLS | Check target hostname, certificate validation and target policy |
Request works with socks5h:// but not socks5:// |
DNS placement | Decide whether local DNS is allowed and whether the client bypasses the proxy elsewhere |
| Browser behaves differently from curl | Application path | Inspect browser proxy rules, extensions, WebRTC and direct-connection exceptions |
The curl proxy article covers authentication without putting a password in shell history. For a longer-lived workflow, also test the application that will make the request. Protocol selection can fix a mismatch; it cannot grant permission to a destination or replace an IP-ownership decision.
