Proxies for ecommerce scraping: validate catalog data

Keep product IDs, pagination, currency, and stock checks consistent in a permitted catalog crawl. Separate blocked pages from valid data.

Proxies for ecommerce scraping: validate catalog data

An ecommerce scraping workflow should return comparable product records with stable product and variant IDs. A proxy changes the request route; it does not parse variants, resolve duplicate listings, render JavaScript, or provide a retailer scraper API.

Caution: Crawls can consume paid traffic. Start with a bounded, authorized catalog sample and enforced request and spend caps; stop when either cap is reached. Use a sandbox when available; otherwise follow an approved production test procedure.

Set a record contract before crawling

For an approved public catalog, define product_id, variant_id, title, seller, price, currency, availability, source_url, fetched_at and market. Inspect a sample page and decide which fields must be present for a valid item. A parent product and its size or color variants may share a title but have different prices; do not deduplicate them by title alone.

Check the retailer's official feed or API and access conditions first. If HTML collection is permitted, start with one category and a small page range.

Compare product cards with accepted records, inspect the next-page link, and stop when a cursor repeats. Save a stable key so retries do not append duplicates. The Scrapy guide shows a small per-request proxy pattern; Playwright is appropriate when the actual page requires browser rendering.

In this illustrative batch, page 1 has 3 product cards. Two yield valid records: P42/red/Merchant A/EUR 19.00/DE and P42/blue/Merchant A/EUR 21.00/DE. The third card lacks a price, so the parser rejects it as missing_price.

Page 2 repeats the red variant and links to itself. The batch therefore contains 2 distinct accepted variants, 1 invalid card, and 1 duplicate. Stop on the repeated cursor. Deduplicating by parent ID P42 would remove the valid blue variant.

Treat blocked and localized pages as distinct outcomes

A redirected sign-in page or localized storefront can return HTTP 200. Check the final URL, item ID, market, and currency in every batch. Verify the exit IP separately when regional inventory matters.

The geotargeting guide explains how cookies and the selected delivery country can override an IP-derived region. Preserve one session across related pages when the site stores market selection in a cookie.

Respect the retailer's access terms and relevant robots rules; robots rules do not grant access authorization. On HTTP 429, honor Retry-After when provided and pause instead of multiplying requests through IP rotation.

Compare cost per validated product record, including browser assets and failed fetches, with an official data source or purpose-built scraper API. A raw proxy supplies transport, not ready-made retailer records. See price monitoring for a narrower recurring offer comparison.
