Amazon Scraper API vs Proxy: Choose a Product Data Source
Compare seller APIs, licensed Amazon product data and proxy page checks by record, access scope and reuse rights.
Read guideChoose a licensed feed, extraction API, or proxy by the records, control and validation the workflow needs.

A proxy routes requests from a team-controlled client; a scraping API can return rendered or extracted content, depending on its documented endpoint. Choose a licensed feed when it already covers the needed data. Otherwise compare the same authorized sample by valid records, control, correction effort, terms, and total cost.
Write one example of an acceptable record before evaluating vendors. Include the source URL, required fields, locale, timestamp, and rules for rejecting incomplete or mismatched results. Then inspect an actual endpoint’s request and response contract.
For example, Firecrawl’s scrape API documents selectable output formats such as Markdown and HTML, along with options for extraction and page actions. Those are documented Firecrawl capabilities, not a guarantee that every scraping API has the same features.
| Option | What it supplies | What the team still owns |
|---|---|---|
| Licensed or first-party feed | Data under a defined access and reuse agreement | Confirming fields, coverage, freshness, and permitted downstream use |
| Scraping API | A vendor-operated fetch or extraction response defined by its endpoint | Field validation, missing-data handling, terms review, and vendor-specific limits |
| Proxy | A network route for an HTTP client or browser | Requests, rendering, extraction, validation, pacing, retries, and data rights |
A product called a “proxy API” may only manage proxy accounts, credentials, or sessions. That name does not establish that it accepts a page URL and returns extracted records. Verify the endpoint and sample response before comparing it with an extraction service.
For the same permitted URLs, use the same locale, cadence, and validator for every option. Count a record only when every required field passes. Track attempted pages, rejected records and reasons, billed units, transferred traffic, rendering time, and manual correction work. Compare total spend and maintenance per valid record; headline request success alone can include empty or unusable pages.
Illustrative worksheet: for 100 authorized product URLs, a proxy plus parser returns 72 valid records for 4 USD in traffic and 2 hours of maintenance; a scraping API returns 91 valid records for 20 USD in credits and 15 minutes of review. Require each record to contain a SKU, seller, EUR price, and capture time.
If any field is missing, reject the record. Traffic alone costs 4 USD / 72, about 0.056 USD per valid proxy record; API credits cost 20 USD / 91, about 0.220 USD per valid API record. These hypothetical inputs are not provider performance or prices.
To include labor, add hours multiplied by the same hourly rate to each route’s spend before dividing by its valid-record count. Keep the direct-service and labor-inclusive results separately labeled.
If an endpoint returns a nominally successful response but its body contains a challenge page, consent screen, or empty shell, classify it as invalid for this task. If the source sends HTTP 429, reduce request volume and honor Retry-After when supplied. Do not rotate routes to bypass a denial or source limit.
Use a first-party or licensed feed when its contract covers the fields and reuse. Choose a scraping API when its specific endpoint supplies useful rendering or extraction and the validated output justifies its ongoing fee. Choose a proxy when transport is the missing piece and an existing client should retain control of collection and parsing.
For a vendor-operated fetch endpoint compared with transport, see web unblocker vs proxy; for code using a raw proxy route, start with the Python Requests proxy example.
Scale your workflows with the tools you already use. Rotating or sticky sessions up to 72 hours.
