SERP API vs Proxy: Choose a Search Data Source

Compare Search Console data, licensed search-result APIs and proxy page checks by question, coverage and control.

SERP API vs Proxy: Choose a Search Data Source

Quick answer

Use Google Search Console for performance data on a property the account can access, a licensed search engine results page (SERP) API for repeatable result observations, and a proxy for a controlled page check from a chosen route. A proxy returns no normalized ranking dataset, and no single source answers all three questions.

Match the source to the question

“Google search API” can refer to different products. Search Console’s Search Analytics API reports clicks, impressions, click-through rate, and average position for an authorized Search Console property. Google notes that internal limits mean the API does not guarantee every data row. It is not a general feed for competitors’ search results.

Google’s Custom Search JSON API is closed to new customers. Existing customers must transition by 2027-01-01. Evaluate its documented availability and transition timeline before designing a new integration around it.

Need Better starting point Boundary to check
Clicks and impressions for an owned or authorized site property Search Console Property access, dimensions, date range, and row limits
Repeatable competitor or search-feature observations Licensed SERP API Engine, location, language, device, result types, timestamp, and reuse terms
Inspect how a page renders through a regional route Proxy with a controlled browser or client Consent, personalization, session state, policy, and capture conditions

A provider such as DataForSEO’s live advanced SERP endpoint documents parameters for location, language, device, and result data. Confirm that the current endpoint returns the specific features and fields the report needs. A proxy can route a browser request, but it does not label organic rank, normalize URLs, or create consistent observations on its own.

Define one comparable observation

Before sampling, record the engine, exact query, language, geographic target and granularity, device, result type, organic-versus-ad distinction, requested features, capture time, and URL-normalization rule. Decide whether local results, maps, shopping modules, news, or other result features count. Keep missing fields as missing instead of filling them with a guessed rank.

Worked example: a competitor rank report

Illustrative input: query=running shoes, engine=Google, country=DE, language=de, device=mobile, and time=2026-09-14T10:00Z; the report asks whether a competitor’s canonical URL appears in organic results. Search Console cannot answer that competitor question. Accept a licensed response only if its location, language, device, and result type match and the returned URL and position can be normalized.

A proxy-loaded page is a presentation check unless its capture state and extraction also meet that observation contract.

If a result source reports a different device or leaves its location ambiguous, mark that observation invalid for the comparison. Keep the terms and data-reuse review with the chosen collection route; robots rules are crawler preferences, not access authorization. For a regional page check on a site in scope, see SEO monitoring with proxies and the Playwright proxy example.
